The answers to your most commonly asked questions about Federation and and our Annual Campaign

What does Jewish Federation of Howard County do?

We build community and raise funds to help those in need, enrich Jewish life and strengthen global peoplehood. From aiding victims of the earthquake disaster in Nepal to caring for seniors who need assistance in Howard County, Federation helps heal the world.

What is the Annual Campaign and where does the money go?

The Annual Campaign is our fundraising effort to support the current needs of our community and to build a better Jewish future. Thanks to our donors, we are able to help strengthen Jewish community in Howard County and create a better life for Jews at home, in Israel and communities throughout the world. When you donate to the Annual Campaign, you support these communal priorities.

What's a pledge and why is pledging important?

A pledge is a promise to pay in the future.  Pledges allow us to plan for the future and signify your intention to support the work we do for the upcoming year. We budget each spring for the upcoming year based on pledges made.

How does a pledge differ from a payment?

You make a payment when you submit funds to fulfill your pledge. This can be done with a check or credit card, one payment, quarterly charges or monthly charges.

What if I want to send in a donation without pledging?

We welcome donations at any time, but we rely on pledges to help us plan what programs and services can be provided each year.  If you choose to make a one-time donation, even on an annual basis, please know that we will count your donation in the campaign year in which it was received.

What’s the difference between the calendar and fiscal year?

While most taxpayers use a calendar year from January 1st through December 31st, our fiscal year is July 1st through June 30th. We raise money in the current fiscal year for the next year’s needs so we can be fiscally responsible and only spend funds we know we will have. We are currently in fiscal year 2019, which runs from July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019. However, donors have until the end of the calendar year 2019 to fulfill their pledges, and any tax deductions attach to the year in which the pledge is actually paid.

What if I just sent a check?

Your recent check likely fulfilled your 2018 Annual Campaign pledge. We are not asking for more money now, just a pledge to be included in our 2019 Annual Campaign totals.

What is a multi-year pledge and why should I make one?

This year we are introducing an option to make a 2, 3, or 5 year pledge commitment. This will allow staff and lay leaders to refocus valuable time to better understand communal and donor needs while reducing the time and expense of repeated hard mailings, emails, and phone calls to our donors.

Why should I pledge now if I have until June?

Our goal is to close 80% of this year’s pledges by December 31st. The time spent preparing campaign materials, calling, emailing or otherwise communicating with our donors could be better spent providing programming and communal support. Help us build a better Jewish future – pledge today!
