Mr. Alejandro Beutel
September 25, 2016
11:00am
Oakland Mills High School, 9410 Kilimanjaro Rd, Columbia

In this session, we will discuss issues around interpretation and contextualization of Muslim Sacred Texts: The Qu'ran, Sayings of the Prophet, and Hadith literature. With Beutel's extensive background in social and behavioral science, the instructor will guide us in our readings through historical and political angles/perspectives as they impact contemporary issues of present day. Additionally, we will delve into the issues of interpretative methodologies from Islamic tradition, and, to see how they affect the readings of texts. Simply put, one cannot read any text without context while we are collectively thinking about issues of interpretation, as well as, how that impacts contemporary Muslim discourse in many parts of the world, including the United States.
