ISRAEL’S JEWISH AND DEMOCRATIC BALANCE: A historical reflection on the Nation-State Law
The Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia
GUEST SPEAKER: Arie M. Dubnov
There is an unusual, perhaps unprecedented, level of interest, even outside Israel, about the new “Basic Law” that the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, passed this summer, after years of discussion and debate, defining Israel as "the nation-state of the Jewish People".
But what is a “Basic Law”? What is the difference between these laws and the constitution and how did they come into existence? What is new about the recent legislation and what made it so controversial? What are the implications the new law might have on Israel's non-Jewish citizens and on Diaspora Jews? The aim of the lecture is to shed some light on some of these questions.
