DAY 8: Travel

With an area of only 8,019 square miles, it’s surprising how many different kind of landscapes you can see in this small country. From the green forests in the north, through the long Mediterranean shoreline, the holy city of Jerusalem all the way to the desert.  How can I squeeze all of it into one page? I absolutely can’t hence I decided to create something completely different. See for yourself and enjoy the view!

HEBREW WORD OF THE DAY:

Trip\ Tee-yool\ טִיּוּל

DID YOU KNOW?

If you drive without stopping from Dan (north) to Eilat (south) it will take you 5.5 hours and 290 miles!

Urban Nature: The Story of Three Bridges

  • Ad Holom Bridge

The bridge is located near the southern city of Ashdod, 22 miles south of Tel Aviv. The bridge has an interesting story. Back in 1948, during Arab-Israeli war (in Hebrew we call it independence war), the Egyptians wanted to conquer Tel Aviv. The Ad Halom bridge is the most northern place they could reach. “Givati” brigade is the force that stopped the Egyptians. Today, the bridge is recovered, and near it there is a park with memorial wall and few historical buildings and a monument.

  • Gesher HaMaytarim bridge

The bridge, located at the entrance to the city of Jerusalem, is relatively new. The constructions began in 2005. Designed by the Spanish engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava, the idea was to find a solution to the new light rail. The bridge is controversial in Israel: some say it doesn’t suit the unique style of the city, the construction costs exceeded the budget and on top of everything, cracks were discovered on the bridge, slowing constructions and making it even more expensive.

  • Gesher HaYarkon

The bridge is located in Tel Aviv across Hayarkon River. There are many bridges over this river. Some are historic and built during the British mandate, and some are new. This bridge was so famous that one music group decided to be called “Gesher HaYarkon Trio”. Right next to it you can find “the Yarkon Park”.

  • Ein Bokek

Many of you have heard of the Dead Sea. Not so far from the hotels down there you can find the entrance to this canyon. I like this place a lot because you can either hike there with family and young kids (an easy hike) or you can take a longer, more strenuous six-hour hike that includes scenic views.

  • Kids' Museum in Holon

Holon used to be Tel Aviv’s “bad neighbor” to the south, but in the past years the city has changed and now it’s “the city of kids”. In the museum, you can find attractions to kids ages 2.5-12 that combine fun activity, crafts, and adventure as a way to teach children new things.
