Rosh Hodesh: It’s a girl thing!

A Program of the Jewish Federation of Howard County

Rosh Hodesh: It’s a girl thing!  Is a multi-year, monthly celebration of the ancient New Moon holiday for teenage girls that build self-esteem, leadership skills, and Jewish identity.  Launched nationally in 2002, approximately 6,000 girls have participated in Rosh Hodesh groups operated by 190 Jewish institutions of all affiliations, across North America.  The curriculum for this program was developed by Moving Traditions and is the first proactive, informal education program that uses Judaism to enrich the lives of girls.

It is a values-based, experiential Jewish program that strengthens Jewish identity and gives girls a place to feel safe, articulate their questions and concerns, have fun, and be ‘real’ with their peers.  Small groups of girls meet monthly with a trained adult leader. Through discussion, art and drama, the girls integrate core Jewish values as they focus on the things they care about most, such as body image, friendship, relationships, stress competition, and family.

TEENS AND YOUTH

Teen Campaign Initiative
Join us!

The mission of the Jewish Federation of Howard County Teen Campaign
is to help fulfill the Jewish commandment of Tzedakah and Tikun Olam.

Students from 8th to 12th grade, from across the county, collaborate monthly to learn about Jewish philanthropy and acts of Jewish kindness - how to raise awareness about the needs in our community - how to be a fundraiser and a philanthropist. These students will participate in the fulfilling task of awarding the funds raised to different organizations.

These teens represent the next generation of our community’s philanthropists and our future Jewish leaders.

The leadership of the Federation will write a letter of recommendation, for college applications or for employment, for all students that make the teen campaign a part of their philanthropic work.

To learn more or to join this project, please contact Nicole at imunique2u2@aol.com

What a great way to make a difference in your community!

Your generosity of time and effort are very much appreciated and will make a real impact on your friends, on your community and on your family. Your understanding of the importance of tzedakah is something that you will take with you for the rest of your life. Your actions show that Jewish philanthropy is an important part of your Jewish heritage. It is doing what is right!

"There was never any doubt in my mind that I would go to Israel, with the NFTY L'dor V'dor Program, the summer I was entering my junior year of high school. The only obstacle in front of me was paying for this great trip to Israel. Many of my friends living in New York and Boston told me to ask my local Jewish Federation for their support; they had received generous scholarships from their community Federation. I gave it a try and the Jewish Federation of Howard County came through! The funding they gave me enabled me to travel to Israel and the trip changed many aspects of my life. Not only did I connect more with my Judaism and the State of Israel, my worldview changed dramatically. Today, as a freshman at Dickinson College, I am taking Modern Hebrew and I am considering a major in Middle Eastern Studies. I am aching so badly to return to Israel that I may do a summer program in 2009 or study abroad for my junior year. My trip to Israel shaped my Jewish Identity and none of it would have been possible without the financial support of my community."

Thank you, Terri Soifer
